Top 5 San Diego Medicare Supplements for 2020
When meeting with new and existing clients, I get asked the question “what is the best company for a Medicare Supplement”? a lot! This is an interesting question because, by law every letter plan must offer the same basic benefits. So, if you have a Plan F for instance, the freedom to choose your Doctor and the coverage benefits are the same. The only difference between them is what you pay monthly and recently some carriers offer “extras” which I’ll go over in more detail below!
Keep in mind this list is always changing as the insurance carriers are always competing for your business. They do this by being competitive in the premiums they charge, offering discounts for various reasons and the “extras”.
Below is my to 5 Medicare Supplements in San Diego and as an experienced broker, my professional opinion in no particular order.
United Healthcare - AARP
No list of Medicare Supplement Carriers would complete without United Health Care/ AARP. UHC is one of the leaders in health insurance and their Medicare Supplements are a great option.
With UHC offering Household discounts if both members are on a plan and having a Free Gym Membership included, they are a great choice!
Cigna
Another very well known name, Cigna is on the list. Cigna has competitive premiums for most ages and they have an online portal for policy holders where you can view benefits, order replacement cards and more.
Cigna has an A Rating from A.M. Best for financial strength and have been in the Medicare space since 1982. They are a great partly because of their customer service, which is top notch!
Combined Insurance
Combined Insurance is probably the least well known name on the list. Combined Insurance is a subsidiary of The Chubb Group, one of the largest insurers in the world. This gives them a lot of financial strength with a A- by A.M Best.
Combined also has great customer service and their premiums, especially for folks over 70 are some of the lowest and most stable in the industry. Add that together with the discount they give for just living with another person, they don’t have to be on their plan for you to get a discount and you can see why Combined is on the list!
Health Net
Health Net in California is another great carrier. They have excellent rates, especially for people just turning 65 and joining Medicare for the first time. They offer a Plan G Extra that includes

- Hearing
- Fitness
- Chiropractic / Acupuncture
- 24 / 7 Nurse Advice Line
You can also add their Standard Dental PPO for $19 a month extra.
Blue Shield of California
Blue Shield, another very well known company is a great option as well and has been our most popular carrier in the last year or so.
They also have a Plan G “extra” which offers vision and hearing coverage, Silver Sneakers gym membership and the also offer a $100 per quarter OTC allowance. Which enable you to get over the counter medications and other health related supplies at zero cost to you up to $100 per quarter!! Put that on top of them having THE most competetive premium going and you can see why they’re so popular!
